Description:
Practical study of the practices associated with utilizing frozen-thawed semen in the breeding of horses.
(Note: For training in how to freeze semen, see the Freezing Stallion Semen School).
Lectures (3.5 hrs):
- Overview & keys to success
- Preliminary steps & procedural guidelines
- Costs associated with frozen-thawed semen
- Frozen-thawed semen research (fertility, packaging, etc.)
- Mare management (pre-breeding assessment, hormone &
examination protocols, post-breeding assessment)
- Shipping procedures, receiving & storing frozen semen
- Frozen-thawed semen breeding contracts
Demonstration Lab (0.5 hr):
- Equipment, containers & supplies
Hands-on Labs (3 hrs):
- Thawing procedures & assessing semen motility
- Inseminating the mare
